Hospice care vs. palliative care Westchester County: Similar but different

Hospice care and palliative care are two distinct approaches to healthcare, but their similarities and overlap may confuse. This blog aims to explain their differences as well as when combined, the significant impact they may have on the quality of life for patients nearing the end of life.

Hospice Care Westchester NY

The who, what, when & where of hospice care Westchester

Hospice care is a specialized approach to caring for individuals with terminal illnesses, emphasizing comfort and dignity in the final stages of life. It focuses on affirming life and accepting death as a natural part of the life cycle without trying to hasten or delay it. The primary goal of hospice is to enhance the quality of life for patients by providing comprehensive care. Hospice care is available to individuals who have a life-limiting illness and is provided in various settings, including private residences, skilled nursing facilities, and assisted living facilities.

Hospice care is typically recommended when a patient has a prognosis of six months or less, as determined by a physician. It is designed to support patients and assist their family members and caregivers by offering education, respite care, and counseling services. This holistic end-of-life journey is more manageable. Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans.

Palliative care is an approach to healthcare that aims to improve the quality of life for individuals dealing with serious illnesses. Unlike hospice care, which is specifically for patients nearing the end of life, palliative care can be provided at any stage of serious illness, regardless of the prognosis. Its primary purpose is to manage symptoms, relieve pain, and offer holistic support addressing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Palliative care teams work closely with patients, their families, and other healthcare providers to create personalized care plans that align with the patient’s values and preferences.

While hospice care may include palliative care as a fundamental component, not all palliative care is hospice care. Hospice care is typically reserved for patients with a life expectancy of six months or less, focusing entirely on comfort rather than curative treatments. In contrast, palliative care can be integrated alongside curative treatments at any illness stage. It takes place in various settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing homes, and patients’ homes. By addressing the multifaceted needs of patients and their families, palliative care provides essential support, enhancing well-being and quality of life even as patients continue their treatments.

The History of Jansen Hospice Care in Westchester, NY

The history of Jansen Hospice & Palliative Care began with Elizabeth “Bissie” Jansen, whose personal experience of caring for her husband Allan during his battle with throat cancer inspired her vision. In the months that followed, others in similar situations sought her help, which sparked her dream to establish a dedicated support system for those facing the end of life.

In the winter of 1981, Bissie presented her compassionate end-of-life care concept to the Junior League of Bronxville. They responded enthusiastically, forming a Hospice Task Force and providing seed money. The Task Force embarked on an intensive self-education process, researching different types of hospices and services and engaging with numerous civic groups, churches, and hospitals to gauge community interest in a local hospice program.

By January 1984, Jansen Memorial Hospice opened its doors, offering dignity and hope to families in Westchester and Bronx counties. Over the past 35 years, our dedicated nurses, social workers, doctors, aides, therapists, and volunteers have provided immeasurable care. Jansen made an unbearable experience somewhat bearable. My wife of 52 years went into hospice at home on August 4 and died on August 29 from metastatic breast cancer. The moment we agreed with the doctors to end chemo and move to hospice, Jansen took over. Social Worker Deb Hanley organized everything. Nurse Marcia Roberts was available at all times and made sure that we had all the necessary medicines and equipment before we knew that we needed them. The aides who came to our home every day were all both kind and competent. I had never heard of Jansen before the staff at Lawrence Hospital introduced us. I do not know how to say thank you any better than writing this 5-star review.” – William H.

We struggled with caring for my mom at home for 5 years and when they arrived it was like angels singing… Our social worker – Jody and our RN Violeta – made my mom comfortable and cared not only for her, but for our family as if we were their own. What Are The Different Types of Westchester, NY Hospice Care?Westchester NY Hospice Care, man holding the sun

Many different kinds of hospice care are available based on the needs of the patient.

  • Routine Hospice Care: Hospice care is provided in the patient’s home or residence and includes skilled nursing and assisted living facilities
  • Respite Care: This is when patients are transported from their home to a Medicare-approved facility for up to five days to allow the primary caregiver respite from the daily stress of caring for a loved one.
  • Continuous Care: This is a time-limited benefit offered only during a crisis. An LPN or RN remains with the patient for 8-24-hours to provide continuous monitoring, assessment, and medication administration to achieve comfort. This type of care must be approved by the Hospice Patient Care Coordinator and Medical Director.
  • General Inpatient Hospice: Hospice care is provided in the hospital and is a short-term option. This can be used when a patient’s symptoms cannot be managed in any other setting.

Westchester, NY Hospice Care Reviews

At Jansen Hospice, our staff takes great care in making sure every patient feels comfortable and every family knows their loved one is in great hands.

Below is a testimonial to our work from a member of our community.

I do not know how to say thank you any better than writing this 5-star review. — William

They stood by me through all the trials and tribulations and I could’ve never done that transition without them. Eternally grateful.
