Palliative care is specialized medical support focused on relieving the symptoms, stress, and discomfort of serious illness. It can begin at any point after diagnosis, whether a patient is actively pursuing curative treatment or not, and is appropriate for anyone living with a serious illness, at any age. Jansen delivers this support to patients and families throughout Westchester County and the Northern Bronx, wherever a patient calls home. Led by Medical Director Andy Mumm, MD, Jansen’s palliative care team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, and spiritual counselors available 24/7 to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of both patients and their families.
Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care is a nonprofit, Joint Commission–accredited hospice provider serving Westchester County and the Northern Bronx since 1983, licensed by New York State as an Article 40 Hospice Provider, certified by Medicare and Medicaid, and accredited by The Joint Commission. Palliative care is delivered in partnership with the care team at NewYork-Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital and the broader NewYork-Presbyterian healthcare system.
How Jansen Supports Patients and Families
- Symptom Management and Pain Relief — Palliative care begins with getting a patient’s symptoms under control. Andy Mumm, MD, and the Jansen clinical team work directly with a patient’s existing physicians to manage pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and other symptoms that reduce quality of life. The goal is to make daily living more bearable while treatment continues.
- Emotional Support for Patients and Families — Serious illness affects everyone in the household, not just the patient. Jansen’s licensed social workers and counselors provide ongoing emotional support to help families process fear, grief, and the weight of difficult decisions. This support is available throughout the course of care.
- Care Coordination — Navigating multiple specialists, treatment plans, and medical settings is exhausting. Jansen works alongside a patient’s existing care team to ensure that palliative support integrates smoothly with whatever treatment is already in place, reducing the burden on families.
- Spiritual Care — Jansen’s hospice chaplain offers spiritual counseling to patients and families of all faith traditions and backgrounds, with no religious affiliation required. This support addresses the deeper questions that often surface during serious illness and offers a space for reflection, meaning-making, and peace.
